Format Cells & Ranges, Define and Reference Named Ranges (Spreadsheet) Aim
To learn how to format cells and ranges and how to create, define and use named ranges in a spreadsheet application (MS Excel / LibreOffice Calc).
Requirements
Computer system
Spreadsheet software (MS Excel / LibreOffice Calc)
Part – 1 : Formatting Cells and Ranges
Procedure
Open the spreadsheet application.
Enter sample data in the worksheet.
A B C
Name Trade Marks
Raju Electrician 78
Kumar Fitter 82
Ravi Welder 69
A. Font Formatting
Select the cells A1:C1 (Heading row)
Click Bold
Change Font Size to 14
Change Font Color to Blue
Result: Heading becomes highlighted.
B. Alignment Formatting
Select A1:C4
Click Center Alignment
Use Middle Align
Result: Data appears centered inside cells.
C. Number Formatting
Select column C (Marks)
Choose Number → Number Format
Set Decimal places = 0
Result: Marks display as whole numbers.
D. Border & Fill Color
Select range A1:C4
Click Borders → All Borders
Apply Fill Color (Light Grey) to heading row
Result: Table becomes clearly visible.
E. Column Width & Row Height
Double click column border → AutoFit width
Increase row height manually
Result: Proper spacing in table.
Part – 2 : Define Named Range
Purpose
Named Range helps refer to a group of cells using a name instead of cell address.
Procedure to Create Named Range
Select cells C2:C4 (Marks column)
Click Formulas → Define Name
Enter Name: Marks
Click OK
Now range C2:C4 is stored as name Marks
Part – 3 : Referencing Named Range
Using in Formula
In another cell type:
=AVERAGE(Marks)
Press Enter
Result: Average of marks is calculated.

Other Examples
Formula Purpose
=SUM(Marks) Total marks
=MAX(Marks) Highest marks
=MIN(Marks) Lowest marks
Result
Cells and ranges were formatted successfully. Named range was created and used in formulas to perform calculations.
Precautions
Do not use spaces in named ranges (use underscore if needed).
Always select correct range before naming.
Ensure numeric format for calculation cells.
