To examine/operate various Input / Output deives connected to the CPU

Appartus requried:

  1. A Computer CPU
  2. Input devies (Mouse, Keyboard, Scanner, etc)
  3. Output devices(Monitor, Printer, etc)
  4. 1 Screw driver

Procedure:

  1. Noted the list, manufacurer, name and model name/number of all the I/O devices that are attached to the computer CPU.
  2. Without disconnecting the cables from ports, identified the cable connections and labelled the ports.
  3. Disconnected the cables gently from the CPU unit and labelled each cable. Use screw driver to unscrew the cable sockets if they are fixed/screwed to the CPU unit.
  4. For each disconnected cable, identified and recorded the detail of connectors found at its end. The details were recorded in the following form:

  • Name of the connector
  • No of pins in the connector
  • Identification of pins
  • Male or female plug
  • Polarization if any
  • Name of the connector
  • Locking/unlocking, fixing provisions.
  • Any other descriptive remarks if required

    5. Reconnected the respective cables between the devices and the CPU unit.

    6. Connected the power cable to main supply and checked the working of these I/O devices

An input device can send data to another device, but it cannot receive data form another device. for eg a computer keyboard or a mouse, can send data(input) to the computer, but they cannot receive or reproduce information(output) from the computer.

An output device can receive data form another device, but it cannot sen data to another device. for eg a computer monitor, projector, and speakers can receive data (output) from the computer, but they cannot send information (input) to the computer.

An input/output device can send data to another device and also receive data from another device. for eg, a computer CD-RW drive and USB flash drive or touch LED monitors can send data (input) to a computer and also receive data(output) from a computer.

Result:

All the I/O devices were properly connected and working properly after reconnection to the CPU unit.
